Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a neurosurgeon, mother of two awesome daughters, and a life-long fan of speculative fiction. Other than a few years spent out in lovely Oregon, I’ve lived and worked in New England, where I practice medicine and write.

What types of books do you write, and why?

I’ve been a fan of science fiction and fantasy since childhood, and I follow the motto: “write what you read”. All types of fantasy, from alternate history to contemporary, interest me (I have a special soft spot for dragons). I grew up hearing about my Italian grandmother’s talent in casting the evil eye, so I have an interest in the mythology and culture of the Mediterranean region, including the Middle East and North Africa. I try to incorporate literature and lore from non-Northern European sources in my writing.

She ends up with Daniel Goldstein, who’s dealing with a recent break-up with his boyfriend and his Jewish grandmother’s ghost. Stuck in a magical contract with him, Zahara has to battle paranormal mercenaries and bumbling terrorists while she tries to save the world from one fallen angel… and save her heart from another.

How to Run Away From Home:

And Bring Your Family With You

by Adam Dailey  (Author)

51fqbpnA8CLPerhaps you’ve dreamed of escaping the stress of your everyday routine by taking a year off to explore the world with your loved ones. Maybe you’ve thought about changing your life but dismissed it as impossible. It’s not. The Dailey family did it, and Adam is here to show you how to take the plunge and stop making excuses.

Adam Dailey’s history as a professional athlete, entrepreneur, sports marketer and speaker has shown that he’s always followed his passion. When he put his professional life on hold to take a twelve month “family sabbatical,” the future of his business was uncertain and his young school-aged son was struggling with a sensory disorder. But instead of waiting for a “right time” that might never come, Adam, his wife, and their four small children set off on an epic global trek.

How to Run Away From Home is an essential how-to guide as well as a fascinating tale that includes castles, narrowly avoiding Brazilian prison, and swimming with dolphins. Dailey supplies all you’ll need for your own successful sabbatical—from how to plan and finance it to schooling on the road to dealing with the unexpected and managing obligations back home.

There are risks, but the rewards are enormous. All it takes is spontaneity, flexibility, and the courage to take the leap!

Fantasy Author, Dianna L. Gunn:

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Oh boy, what do I say? I’m a freelance writer by day, a fantasy author by night, and a massive nerd all the time. I play lots of RPGs—mostly video games, although I am hoping to do more tabletop role playing this year—and read less books than I should, but more books than a lot of people I know.

What types of books do you write, and why?

I write alternate world fantasy, both YA and adult books, usually with a darker bent. Why I write these books is a bit more complicated. First and foremost, fantasy is the genre I’ve spent the most time in and these are the stories that pop into my head, often in my dreams. But when I’m building my world, fleshing out my characters and adding details to these stories I am also focusing on something bigger: challenging fantasy stereotypes.

To challenge these stereotypes I write strong female characters with true agency. I create worlds where strong women are accepted, not an anomaly. Many of these worlds also have very different attitudes towards sexuality, gender and relationships. Most importantly, I show my characters having a wide range of relationships, both sexual and otherwise.

KeeperoftheDawn_FrontCover-1-664x1024.jpgKeeper of the Dawn

Sometimes failure is just the beginning

All Lai has ever wanted is to become a priestess, like her mother and grandmother before her, in service to their beloved goddess. That’s before the unthinkable happens, and Lai fails the trials she has trained for her entire life. She makes the only choice she believes she can: she runs away.

From her isolated desert homeland, Lai rides north to the colder, stranger kingdom of Alanum—a land where magic, and female warriors, are not commonplace.

Here, she hears tales about a mountain city of women guardians and steel forgers, worshiping goddesses who sound very similar to Lai’s own. Determined to learn more about these women, these Keepers of the Dawn, Lai travels onward to find their temple. She is determined to make up for her past failure, and will do whatever it takes to join their sacred order.

Falling in love with another initiate was not part of the plan.

Keeper of the Dawn is a tale of new beginnings, second chances, and the endurance of hope.

Danielle DiMartino Booth

Danielle DiMartino BoothDanielle DiMartino Booth makes bold predictions based on meticulous research and her years of experience in central banking and on Wall Street. Known for sounding an early warning about the housing bubble in the 2000s, Danielle offers a unique perspective to audiences seeking expertise in the financial markets, the economy, and the intersection of central banking and politics.

Called “The Dallas Fed’s Resident Soothsayer” by D Magazine, Danielle is a well-known speaker who can tailor her message to a myriad of audiences, once spending a week crossing the ocean to present to groups as diverse as the Portfolio Management Institute in Newport Beach, the Global Interdependence Center in London and the Four States Forestry Association in Texarkana. Her success is based on her ability to translate the arcane language of Wall Street thinkers and Fed insiders to the man on the street. Danielle is regularly featured on CNBC and Bloomberg.

From Wall Street to respected columnist to Fed Advisor, Danielle spent nine years as a Senior Financial Analyst with the Federal Reserve of Dallas and served as an Advisor on monetary policy to Dallas Federal Reserve President Richard W. Fisher until his retirement. Fisher called on Danielle to serve at the Fed after becoming a loyal reader of her financial column in the Dallas Morning News. She began her career in New York at Credit Suisse and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette where she worked in the fixed income, public equity and private equity markets. Danielle earned her BBA as a College of Business Scholar at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She holds an MBA in Finance and International Business from the University of Texas at Austin and an MS in Journalism from Columbia University.

Fed Up

An Insider’s Take on Why the Federal Reserve is Bad for America

by Danielle DiMartino Booth  (Author)

Danielle DiMartino Booth fedupA Federal Reserve insider pulls back the curtain on the secretive institution that controls America’s economy

After correctly predicting the housing crash of 2008 and quitting her high-ranking Wall Street job, Danielle DiMartino Booth was surprised to find herself recruited as an analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, one of the regional centers of our complicated and widely misunderstood Federal Reserve System. She was shocked to discover just how much tunnel vision, arrogance, liberal dogma, and abuse of power drove the core policies of the Fed.

DiMartino Booth found a cabal of unelected academics who made decisions without the slightest understanding of the real world, just a slavish devotion to their theoretical models. Over the next nine years, she and her boss, Richard Fisher, tried to speak up about the dangers of Fed policies such as quantitative easing and deeply depressed interest rates. But as she puts it, “In a world rendered unsafe by banks that were too big to fail, we came to understand that the Fed was simply too big to fight.”

Now DiMartino Booth explains what really happened to our economy after the fateful date of December 8, 2008, when the Federal Open Market Committee approved a grand and unprecedented experiment: lowering interest rates to zero and flooding America with easy money. As she feared, millions of individuals, small businesses, and major corporations made rational choices that didn’t line up with the Fed’s “wealth effect” models. The result: eight years and counting of a sluggish “recovery” that barely feels like a recovery at all.

While easy money has kept Wall Street and the wealthy afloat and thriving, Main Street isn’t doing so well. Nearly half of men eighteen to thirty-four live with their parents, the highest level since the end of the Great Depression. Incomes are barely increasing for anyone not in the top ten percent of earners. And for those approaching or already in retirement, extremely low interest rates have caused their savings to stagnate. Millions have been left vulnerable and afraid.

Perhaps worst of all, when the next financial crisis arrives, the Fed will have no tools left for managing the panic that ensues. And then what?

DiMartino Booth pulls no punches in this exposé of the officials who run the Fed and the toxic culture they created. She blends her firsthand experiences with what she’s learned from dozens of high-powered market players, reams of financial data, and Fed documents such as transcripts of FOMC meetings.

Whether you’ve been suspicious of the Fed for decades or barely know anything about it, as DiMartino Booth writes, “Every American must understand this extraordinarily powerful institution and how it affects his or her everyday life, and fight back.

Fantasy Author, Morgan Hazelwood:

My Website/Blog | Twitter | FB Author Page | FB | Instagram | Pinterest | Tumblr

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born in Philly (Philadelphia, PA) and raised in Virginia, as the daughter of a librarian and a network engineer. So, of course I grew up to be a software engineer by day and writer by night.

Over the years, my hobbies have included fencing, longsword, lifting weights, reading, dancing (studio and social), and cosplaying. As a younger identical twin, I have the distinction of having “cosplayed” Princess Leia before I could hold my head up, due to my mother cosplaying Luke/Leia’s nanny when she could still cradle each of us on an arm.

I also have a habit of hostessing. I’ve hosted annual parties of up to 120 people. I was a volunteer for a local anime convention for several years- thanks to a severe web-comic addiction and a fondness for cosplaying and helping out behind-the-scenes. I now help run a support group for YA writers who are at the point of looking for agents for their finished (or as finished as a novel ever gets) work.

What types of books do you write, and why?

I write fantasy that leans towards YA, partially because that’s what I like to read myself. (I’m scared to try writing Urban fantasy, though). My current novel started as a few scenes in a dream I had many years ago. The only way for me to find out who the people were and what happened to them was to write the story myself. After three attempts, I finished my rough draft 3 years ago. Now, I’m working on turning that rough draft into a polished tale.

INK AND SNOW

Work In Progress

I’m currently working on INK AND SNOW, the sequel to my first book, INK AND FLESH.

“In a world where those with blue patterns on their skin are known to be ripe for demon possession, Lilyen, a devout young woman struggles with her faith when she finds herself marked. On the run from the church’s elite forces, she learns the truth about her marks, what happens to those who are marked and their loved ones, and what happens to those the church claims to favor. Lilyen has a sister to save. No rebel sanctuary, corrupt church, nor overprotective parent will stand in her way.”

I just finished its final round of edits, and am hoping to query come Spring. Fingers crossed!

Midnight
J. P. Midnight

Science Fiction Author, J. P. Midnight:

Twitter | Facebook

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

For how confident my Main Characters can be, I sure am pretty shy for an author. Just kidding. I’m likely to tell you a little too much about myself. Don’t those first three lines already say the world about me? Not enough?

Well, it all started years ago. When I was a young boy, I always had a story to tell. I’d always be talkin’ – talkin’ for miles. My family members used to always say, ‘you should write a book.’ But I didn’t like books. Surprise! They were always this dry stack of old crusty papers I had to read in order to get a passing grade in school. (Ghetto school systems, yo :P)

So, I grew up on video games and movies, basically. Thankfully it was during a time when CGI wasn’t everything, or fancy graphics. Back then, storytelling was the name of the game and franchises like Final Fantasy was my poison. So I got in my reading, along with a grand adventure to crazy new worlds. It wasn’t until college that I opened up to the idea of books and writing. Alright? Origins out of the way

About five years ago, I had an idea for an amazing story after getting fed up with some recent movies and shows for being so.. crummy. So I said to heck with it, I’ll write my own story, my way, the way that I like ‘em. Only took a few chapters to realize I had a passion for it. Only took a few CP’s to realize that I was like a seagull with a paintbrush. :p My writing back then could have very well been considered a crime against humanity Naw, I’m j/k. I do that a lot. It was bad though.

Here’s a little silver lining, one-liner, to sign me off with for this question: I stuck with it, got better, honed my craft and skills, and even if nothing comes of my stories, I’m glad I learned all that I did.

What types of books do you write, and why?

I’ve always liked stories with deeper meaning, the one’s where like if you choose to glance at it from afar, it’s a pretty good story, but if you decide to dig in, there’s more, and more the deeper you go. I like all characters to have a deep and rich storyline, even the minor ones. This may not exactly translate to my two or three recent stories as they are a WIP – but, rest assured, I’ve spent plenty of time with each of my MC’s and Villains thinking about many aspects of their lives, writing up interviews and mixing and matching them to see what happens.

So … yeah. Sci-Fi mostly, though I’m working my way toward a Horror story. I suppose it might be due to my early exposure of fantastical new worlds from games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Final Fantasy, none of which ever did a good job on the big screen. Play the games DO NOT watch the movies. But, to be fair, that’s bad advice at this point as most people couldn’t handle the blocky graphics of PS1/2 games these days

E.V. Jones

E.V. Jones lives in Geneva, Illinois with her husband and 6 children. She was born and raised in Northlake, Illinois and is one of seven children. Her love for writing has followed her throughout her life as she started at a young age writing poems. Once she had children, her love for story telling went from making up bedtime stories when putting her kids to sleep at night, to inventing worlds and putting it on paper.

The writing of stories on paper though didn’t necessarily come with the intent of ever getting those stories published. This occurred due to her oldest son George, who was diagnosed with auditory processing disorder at age 7. Because this disorder most often will cause a delay in speech, it was her son’s teachers that suggested he write stories down and then practiced reading them out loud. Due to his delay in speech, writing stories and then telling them was a form of therapy. So, one to two nights a week, after putting her other children to bed, E.V. would write stories with George. Sometimes they would make up stories together, but most times they would just sit and write their own stories. She has always been drawn to Ireland, its customs and stories. From this fascination came the makings of The Clover. It was a short story that ended up taking on a life of its own years later, when out of the blue, it resurfaced in her mind and she pulled it out of her files on her computer. Characters were born from people she knew, assuming many of the characteristics, sayings, and physical attributes from those in her life. After almost a year of writing her story, The Wish was finished!

J.D. Barker

As a child I was always told the dark could not hurt me, that the shadows creeping in the corners of my room were nothing more than just that, shadows. The sounds nothing more than the settling of our old home, creaking as it found comfort in the earth only to move again when it became restless, if ever so slightly. I would never sleep without closing the closet door, oh no; the door had to be shut tight. The darkness lurking inside needed to be held at bay, the whispers silenced. Rest would only come after I checked under the bed at least twice and quickly wrapped myself in the safety of the sheets (which no monster could penetrate), pulling them tight over my head. We All Looked Up

We All Looked Up

by Tommy Wallach  (Author)

Four high school seniors put their hopes, hearts, and humanity on the line as an asteroid hurtles toward Earth in Tommy Wallach’s New York Times bestselling “stunning debut” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

They always say that high school is the best time of your life.

Peter, the star basketball player at his school, is worried “they” might actually be right. Meanwhile Eliza can’t wait to escape Seattle—and her reputation—and perfect-on-paper Anita wonders if admission to Princeton is worth the price of abandoning her real dreams. Andy, for his part, doesn’t understand all the fuss about college and career—the future can wait.

Or can it? Because it turns out the future is hurtling through space with the potential to wipe out life on Earth. As these four seniors—along with the rest of the planet—wait to see what damage an asteroid will cause, they must abandon all thoughts of the future and decide how they’re going to spend what remains of the present.

The You I’ve Never Known

The You I’ve Never Known

by Ellen Hopkins  (Author)

How do you live your life if your past is based on a lie? A new novel in both verse and prose from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ellen Hopkins.

For as long as she can remember, it’s been just Ariel and Dad. Ariel’s mom disappeared when she was a baby. Dad says home is wherever the two of them are, but Ariel is now seventeen and after years of new apartments, new schools, and new faces, all she wants is to put down some roots. Complicating things are Monica and Gabe, both of whom have stirred a different kind of desire.

Maya’s a teenager who’s run from an abusive mother right into the arms of an older man she thinks she can trust. But now she’s isolated with a baby on the way, and life’s getting more complicated than Maya ever could have imagined.

Ariel and Maya’s lives collide unexpectedly when Ariel’s mother shows up out of the blue with wild accusations: Ariel wasn’t abandoned. Her father kidnapped her fourteen years ago.

What is Ariel supposed to believe? Is it possible Dad’s woven her entire history into a tapestry of lies? How can she choose between the mother she’s been taught to mistrust and the father who has taken care of her all these years?

In bestselling author Ellen Hopkins’s deft hands, Ariel’s emotionally charged journey to find out the truth of who she really is balances beautifully with Maya’s story of loss and redemption. This is a memorable portrait of two young women trying to make sense of their lives and coming face to face with themselves—for both the last and the very first time.

I was adopted at birth and raised by a great, loving older couple. I grew up in Palm Springs CA, although we summered in Napa and Lake Tahoe, to avoid those 120 degree summers. After my adopted parents died, I did find my birth mother, who lives in Michigan with my half sister.

I studied journalism in college, but left school to marry, raise kids and start my own business–a video store, before the mega-chains were out there. After a divorce, I met my current husband and we moved to Tahoe to become ski bums and otherwise try to find our dreams. At that time, I went to work for a small alternative press, writing stories and eventually editing.

When we moved down the mountain to the Reno area, I started writing nonfiction books, many of which you can see here. The rest are viewable on my personal website. I also continued to freelance articles for newspapers and magazines.

All that has changed, with the publication of my novel, CRANK, which has led to a valued career writing YA novels in verse, all of which explore the more difficult situations young adults often find themselves in. Will I ever write one in prose? No doubt! But, for the moment, writing novels in verse fulfills two needs: writing poetry and writing fiction. The combination is so interesting!

F*CK Him!

F*CK Him!

Nice Girls Always Finish Single

– “A guide for sassy women who want to get back in control of their love life” (The Truth about his weird behavior, … of commitment and sudden loss of interest)

Brian Nox  (Author)

The MANipulator Manual:

Keep Your Man Interested and Begging for More Without Playing Games

Let me start off by explaining I am in no way talking about the sexual act. F*ck him in this case is not physical, it’s mental.

So many women get in trouble in their love lives, and 99.9 percent of that trouble could have been avoided if they’d said, “Well, f*ck him!” a bit more often. Too many women are way too nice and compliant to their men, especially when these men don’t deserve that kind of treatment.

And yet, every woman I’ve ever met tries to not be needy or wear her heart on her sleeve. She simply wants to protect her feelings. Nevertheless, most women I’ve coached have had men seem very interested only to disappear suddenly. These women are left standing in the dark. Once the guy vanishes, they often find out it’s easier to get the President of the United States on the phone than the man who seemingly really liked them…just not enough to stick around.

This should stop.

L. J. Smith

Lisa Jane Smith is the New York Times #1 Bestselling author of The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, The Forbidden Game, Dark Visions, Wildworld and Night World series. She has written over two dozen books for children and young adults, and has enjoyed writing every one of them. She lives in the Bay Area of California, with a backyard that is full of flowers, which she adores, especially with many different shades of roses.

She loves to visit a friend’s little cabin in the Point Reyes National Seashore area, which has lots of trees, lots of animals, lots of beaches to walk on, and lots of places to hike. Once, while hiking, she saw a snow-white buck which allowed her to follow it nearly half a mile. She also likes to collect things: angels (they remind her of her late mother), tiny boxes from different countries or of fanciful shape, nineteenth century children’s literature, and books about quantum physics—especially about the mystery of the dark energy in the universe. A militant optimist, she is also part of the Velociraptor Sisterhood (a fancy way of saying that she likes to read, write and discuss books with strong female characters), and she has traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East. The two countries she loves to visit most are Great Britain, with its historic monuments and amazing country landscapes, and Japan, with its bustling urban life and exquisite mountain scenery.

Her favorite current writer is Terry Pratchett, the author of the Discworld series, for its wild and witty satires on life, death, war, love, assassins, coppers, and Australia. Her favorite classical writer is Jane Austen. Her favorite poets are Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson. Her favorite movies are The Seven Samurai and Avatar (analyze that!). She doesn’t have a favorite TV show, because she doesn’t have time to watch TV (and only owns one for playing movies).

Her favorite people are her readers, each of whom she cherishes with deep and lasting affection.

Waking Up

Waking Up

A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion 1st Edition

by Sam Harris  (Author)

For the millions of Americans who want spirituality without religion, Waking Up is a guide to meditation as a rational practice informed by neuroscience and psychology.

From Sam Harris, neuroscientist and author of numerous New York Times bestselling books, Waking Up is for the twenty percent of Americans who follow no religion but who suspect that important truths can be found in the experiences of such figures as Jesus, the Buddha, Lao Tzu, Rumi, and the other saints and sages of history. Throughout this book, Harris argues that there is more to understanding reality than science and secular culture generally allow, and that how we pay attention to the present moment largely determines the quality of our lives.

Waking Up is part memoir and part exploration of the scientific underpinnings of spirituality. No other book marries contemplative wisdom and modern science in this way, and no author other than Sam Harris—a scientist, philosopher, and famous skeptic—could write it.

From beloved author and National Book Award finalist Deb Caletti comes a fresh and luminous novel “about love and loss, mental illness, and taking charge of one’s own fate” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

There are many ways to be lost.

Sometimes the lost do the unimaginable, like the woman—the body—Mads collides with in the middle of the water on a traumatic morning that changes everything. And sometimes the lost are the ones left behind, like the son of the woman in the water, Billy Youngwolf Floyd.

Billy is struggling to find his way through each day in the shadow of grief. His one comfort is the map he carries in his pocket, out of his favorite book The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. When three lives (and one special, shared book) collide, strange things happen. Things like questions and coincidences and secrets, lots of secrets. Things like falling in love. Q. The Book The Order of Moonlight is A Vampire Romance is a paranormal Journey of Love Have you had a paranormal experience if Author Interview Stamp smallso do you care to share?

Yes, I have had a few paranormal experiences, but the one that jumps out to the forefront of my mind was one night when I went with a group of friends to the movies as a teenager. The movies neighbored the creepy Winchester Mystery House. We had some time to kill before the movie and popped over to the Winchester Mystery House to look around the lobby. Tours were over for the night, but one of the sweet older staff members, in full period costume, told a friend and me that sometimes ghosts appear to visitors via the window or in various spots of the house. She assured us that they were friendly. I am brave, but in some cases, I do embrace my inner chicken. That is code for, I am a card-carrying Scooby and Shaggy type of chicken when it comes to possible spooky encounters, not a fan of the scary, so friendly ghosts or not, in that moment, I was done entirely at Chez Creepy House. With that, I booked it back to the safety of the theater and when I looked back at the house I saw someone in the upstairs window. Later I found out that not only was that figure not supposed to be upstairs in the window, but no one else outside of myself and a friend saw the woman who had spoken to us. Needless to say, to this day, with the jury being out if that woman I talked to was a ghost or not, I don’t make it a habit of going too close to that place. That was enough ghostbuster excitement and fun for this girl. (Giggles.) Continue reading The Order of Moonlight

Shadows of the Stone Benders

Shadows of the Stone Benders

(The Anlon Cully Chronicles Book 1)

by K Patrick Donoghue  (Author)

For fans of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon novels, a riveting archaeological mystery.

World-renowned scientist Anlon Cully is unexpectedly swept into the thick of a suspense-riddled adventure when his archaeologist uncle, Devlin Wilson, dies under suspicious circumstances.

Prior to his “accidental” fall off a New Hampshire mountain trail, Devlin made the discovery of a lifetime – unearthing undeniable proof that a technologically advanced society thrived on Earth long before archaeologists thought possible!

The key to this shocking evidence lies in a set of mysterious stones forged by a long forgotten race of ancient mariners. Instilled with formidable powers to build, communicate, fight and heal, the stones draw the ruthless attention of villainous thieves hell bent on their acquisition by any means possible…including murder.

Aided by friend Pebbles McCarver and police detective Jennifer Stevens, Anlon follows traces of bewildering clues left by his uncle in a dangerous chase to unravel the stones’ secrets before the killer strikes again and escapes with the priceless artifacts.

Peppered with the thought provoking intrigue of a Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child thriller, Shadows of the Stone Benders leaves readers questioning the technological prowess of modern man and the belief that Neolithic humans were nothing more than unsophisticated cave dwellers.

The Blood of Emmett Till

The Blood of Emmett Till

by Timothy B. Tyson  (Author)

In 2014, protesters ringed the White House, chanting, “How many black kids will you kill? Michael Brown, Emmett Till!” Why did demonstrators invoke the name of a black boy murdered six decades before?

In 1955, white men in the Mississippi Delta lynched a fourteen-year-old from Chicago named Emmett Till. His murder was part of a wave of white terrorism in the wake of the 1954 Supreme Court decision that declared public school segregation unconstitutional.

The national coalition organized to protest the Till lynching became the foundation of the modern civil rights movement. Only weeks later, Rosa Parks thought about young Emmett as she refused to move to the back of a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Five years later, the Emmett Till generation, forever marked by the vicious killing of a boy their own age, launched sit-in campaigns that turned the struggle into a mass movement. “I can hear the blood of Emmett Till as it calls from the ground,” shouted a black preacher in Albany, Georgia.

But what actually happened to Emmett Till—not the icon of injustice but the flesh-and-blood boy? Part detective story, part political history, Timothy Tyson’s The Blood of Emmett Till draws on a wealth of new evidence, including the only interview ever given by Carolyn Bryant, the white woman in whose name Till was killed. Tyson’s gripping narrative upends what we thought we knew about the most notorious racial crime in American history.

Between Two Worlds

Lessons from the Other Side

by Tyler Henry  (Author)

From Tyler Henry, a twenty-year-old clairvoyant and star of E!’s hit reality series Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, comes Between Two Worlds, a memoir about his journey as a medium thus far.

“Dying doesn’t mean having to say goodbye.”

Tyler Henry discovered his gift for communicating with the departed when he was just ten years old. After experiencing a sudden, accurate premonition of his grandmother’s death—what Tyler would later describe as his first experience of “knowingness”—life would never be the same. Now in his twenties, Tyler is a renowned, practicing medium, star of the smash hit E! reality show, Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, and go-to clairvoyant of celebrities, VIP’s, and those simply looking for closure and healing. He has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest names including Khloe Kardashian, Amber Rose, Margaret Cho, Jaime Pressly, and Monica Potter.

Despite struggling to accept his rare talent, Tyler grew to embrace it, and finally found the courage to share it with—and ultimately change—the world. For the first time, Tyler pulls back the curtain on living life as a medium in his first memoir, in which he fearlessly opens up about discovering his gift as an adolescent, what it’s truly like to communicate with those who have passed, the power of symbolism in his readings, and the lessons we can learn from our departed loved ones. With unparalleled honesty, Tyler discusses how his complex and fascinating gift has changed his perception of the afterlife, and more importantly, how readings can impact our relationships with our closest friends and family once they’re gone.

Maneaterby W. Charlene Ammons  (Author)

Life as the undead ain’t always easy in the Big Easy. Just ask Valdosta Pynes…

After being turned into a vampire by a fallen angel, Valdosta left the only home she’d ever known to start her life over on the haunted streets of New Orleans. Using her Dark Gift to help others, she is hired as a hit woman by a shady organization known only as The Conservancy. While on a mission, Valdosta’s life takes a dramatic turn when the target of her assassination survives the attack. Author Interview Stamp smallAuthor Interview – W. Charlene Ammons

Q: What draws you to the Science Fiction & Fantasy / Horror Occult Genre?

A: I’ve always had a love for the strange and supernatural. I love the idea that life is not bound by just the things we see. I want to believe there’s more than just us, living here for 80 years and then going to nothingness. There must be something more.

One of the things I’m working on next is a steampunk children’s book dealing with time-travel. That’s something new to me, but I’ve always loved the idea of time travel…Ever since watching the show Quantum Leap as a kid.

As far as horror goes, I studied criminology in college and took a class on serial killers. I was obsessed with learning why they acted the way they did. My goal at the time was to become a profiler with the FBI. I wanted to be Clarice Starling. So, I suppose my roots into horror start there. After all, the real monsters are human, not some creature hiding under the bed.

Q.  Where did the story Maneater come from?

Maneater is the sequel to the first novella I wrote, Absconder. In this second installment, the protagonist, Valdosta Pynes, moves to the big city in an attempt to hide from Heavenly assassins and to begin her life anew as a vampire.

I’d been playing with the idea of a sequel for some time after writing Absconder. Fans who read it said they wanted more. I thought I wanted to transform Valdosta from a run of the mill vampire to one who uses her strength to help those who were like her (abused). She wanted to be the hero she didn’t have. So, I created her as The Maneater.

I’d have to say that of all the stories I’ve written, Maneater is by far my favorite. It has a comic book, superhero quality to it, and that makes me very happy.

Q. Are Valdosta Pynes experiences based on someone you know or events in your own life?

I think every character an author writes has a little bit of their souls tucked away in them; horcruxes if you will. As for Valdosta, her attitude toward life mirrors my own in so many ways. Some of the experiences with abuse hit home with me. In my former career, I was a law enforcement officer. I saw domestic violence first hand, far too often. Valdosta’s approach to eliminating crime is deviant, yet satisfies a need for all of us to see the bad guys receive an outlaw type of justice.

Q.  Have you ever had a Paranormal experience or an encounter with the Dark Gift?

Unfortunately, no experiences with the Dark Gift, although I had a guy ask me one time if I was a vampire ;). I have, however, had several paranormal experiences. Some very strange things happened right after my father’s death. Pictures and clocks flying off the wall, some of my father’s belongings being moved, fans and lights turning off and on. I have no doubt it was my Dad trying to communicate with us.

I also get strange feelings sometimes when I touch old things, especially in old houses. I’m very drawn to antiques, old home places and the cemetery.

Q. Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?

I think so. I think writing can save your soul. When I say it can save your soul, I mean that not in the Christian way, but that it is therapeutic, saving a person from losing their mind. It’s a release. A ventilation system of sorts. If I’m depressed, I find it helpful to write. Angry? Get to typing, sister!

Writing is chicken noodle soup for the soul.

Q. What research did you do on the City of New Orleans; if any was it shocking to you?

I visited New Orleans a few years back and fell in love. I’ve only been there once physically, but I revisit it in my mind day after day.

So, some of the material I got first hand while traveling, either through tours or books I bought. The other part came from researching on Pinterest or the Internet. For example, I knew about the carousel bar, but I researched the history of it and the hotel on the website. While looking on Pinterest, I found a beautiful painting, which just happened to be hanging in the same bar. I quickly decided to tie it all together, making the lady posing in the photo the current owner of the hotel.

Another idea I had was to take the fleur-de-lis and give it an alternative history. I researched it, gave it a twist, and it quickly became the symbol of the supernatural.

Einstein: His Life and Universe

Einstein: His Life and Universe

by Walter Isaacson  (Author)

The definitive, internationally bestselling biography of Albert Einstein. Now the basis of Genius, the ten-part National Geographic series on the life of Albert Einstein, starring the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Award–winning actor Geoffrey Rush as Einstein.

How did his mind work? What made him a genius? Isaacson’s biography shows how Einstein’s scientific imagination sprang from the rebellious nature of his personality. His fascinating story is a testament to the connection between creativity and freedom. Einstein explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk—a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn’t get a teaching job or a doctorate—became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom, and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane. This led him to embrace a morality and politics based on respect for free minds, free spirits, and free individuals.

Einstein, the classic #1 New York Times bestseller, is a brilliantly acclaimed account of the most influential scientist of the twentieth century, “an illuminating delight” (The New York Times). The basis for the National Geographic series Genius, by the author of The Innovators, Steve Jobs, and Benjamin Franklin, this is the definitive biography of Albert Einstein.

The Boy

The Boy: A Novel

by Tami Hoag (Author)

An unfathomable loss or an unthinkable crime? #1 New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag keeps you guessing in her most harrowing thriller yet.

A panic-stricken woman runs in the dead of night, battered and bloodied, desperate to find help…

When Detective Nick Fourcade enters the home of Genevieve Gauthier outside the sleepy town of Bayou Breaux, Louisiana, the bloody crime scene that awaits him is both the most brutal and the most confusing he’s ever seen. Genevieve’s seven-year-old son, P.J., has been murdered by an alleged intruder, yet Genevieve is alive and well, a witness inexplicably left behind to tell the tale. There is no evidence of forced entry, not a clue that points to a motive. Meanwhile, Nick’s wife, Detective Annie Broussard, sits in the emergency room with the grieving Genevieve. A mother herself, Annie understands the emotional devastation this woman is going through, but as a detective she’s troubled by a story that makes little sense. Who would murder a child and leave the only witness behind?

When the very next day P.J.’s sometimes babysitter, thirteen-year-old Nora Florette, is reported missing, the town is up in arms, fearing a maniac is preying on their children. With pressure mounting from a tough, no-nonsense new sheriff, the media, and the parents of Bayou Breaux, Nick and Annie dig deep into the dual mysteries. But sifting through Genevieve Gauthier’s tangled web of lovers and sorting through a cast of local lowlifes brings more questions than answers. Is someone from Genevieve’s past or present responsible for the death of her son? Is the missing teenager, Nora, a victim, or something worse? Then fingerprints at the scene change everything when they come back to a convicted criminal: Genevieve herself.

The spotlight falls heavily on the grieving mother who is both victim and accused. Could she have killed her own child to free herself of the burden of motherhood, or is the loss of her beloved boy pushing her to the edge of insanity?  Could she have something to do with the disappearance of Nora Florette, or is the troubled teenager the key to the murder? How far will Nick and Annie have to go to uncover the dark truth of the boy?

I have a license to carry concealed weapon, but never do. I took the course for research purposes. 3. My high school guidance counselor encouraged me to become an actress, but I thought that was too impractical (Of course, there’s nothing practical about being a writer, either, but at least I’m not obligated to look good on a daily basis.) 4. I used to sing at weddings. 5. While I have no intention of ever getting married again, I love watching Say Yes To The Dress 6. I have legitimate knockout power in my right hand, and I’m not afraid to use it. 7. When I’m stressed out, all tech devices around me go haywire. I’ve stopped watches, and fried hard drives. I once killed a television in a store display by merely touching it. I’m better off sticking to life’s simple pleasures–like books!

Curious Minds: A Knight and Moon Novel

by Janet Evanovich  (Author), Phoef Sutton  (Author)

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Janet Evanovich, bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum series, teams up with Emmy-winning writer Phoef Sutton for a brand-new series of mysteries featuring Emerson Knight and Riley Moon, a dynamic duo with instant and undeniable chemistry.

Emerson Knight is introverted, eccentric, and has little to no sense of social etiquette. Good thing he’s also brilliant, rich, and (some people might say) handsome, or he’d probably be homeless. Riley Moon has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law. Her aggressive Texas spitfire attitude has helped her land her dream job as a junior analyst with mega-bank Blane-Grunwald. At least Riley Moon thought it was her dream job, until she is given her first assignment: babysitting Emerson Knight.

What starts off as an inquiry about missing bank funds in the Knight account leads to inquiries about a missing man, missing gold, and a life-and-death race across the country. Through the streets of Washington, D.C., and down into the underground vault of the Federal Reserve in New York City, an evil plan is exposed. A plan so sinister that only a megalomaniac could think it up, and only the unlikely duo of the irrepressibly charming Emerson Knight and the tenacious Riley Moon can stop it.

Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies

by Liane Moriarty  (Author)

The #1 New York Times bestseller that Entertainment Weekly called “a surefire hit.”

NOW AN HBO® LIMITED SERIES STARRING REESE WITHERSPOON, NICOLE KIDMAN, SHAILENE WOODLEY, ALEXANDER SKARSGÅRD, LAURA DERN, ADAM SCOTT, AND ZOË KRAVITZ FROM THE DIRECTOR OF WILD AND DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, JEAN-MARC VALLÉE, AND WRITER DAVID E. KELLEY

Sometimes it’s the little lies that turn out to be the most lethal…

A murder…a tragic accident…or just parents behaving badly?

What’s indisputable is that someone is dead. But who did what?

Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).

Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.

New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.

Wonder

Wonder

by R. J. Palacio  (Author)

indies5I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.

August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a #1 New York Times bestseller and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.

“Wonder is the best kids’ book of the year,” said Emily Bazelon, senior editor at Slate.com and author of Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. R.J. The Wicked City

The Wicked City

by Beatriz Williams  (Author)

New York Times bestselling author Beatriz Williams recreates the New York City of A Certain Age in this deliciously spicy adventure that mixes past and present and centers on a Jazz Age love triangle involving a rugged Prohibition agent, a saucy redheaded flapper, and a debonair Princetonian from a wealthy family.

When she discovers her husband cheating, Ella Hawthorne impulsively moves out of their SoHo loft and into a small apartment in an old Greenwich Village building. Her surprisingly attractive new neighbor, Hector, warns her to stay out of the basement at night. Tenants have reported strange noises after midnight—laughter, clinking glasses, jazz piano—even though the space has been empty for decades. Back in the Roaring Twenties, the place hid a speakeasy.

In 1924, Geneva “Gin” Kelly, a smart-mouthed flapper from the hills of western Maryland, is a regular at this Village hideaway known as the Christopher Club. Caught up in a raid, Gin becomes entangled with Prohibition enforcement agent Oliver Anson, who persuades her to help him catch her stepfather Duke Kelly, one of Appalachia’s most notorious bootleggers.

Headstrong and independent, Gin is no weak-kneed fool. So how can she be falling in love with the taciturn, straight-arrow Revenue agent when she’s got Princeton boy Billy Marshall, the dashing son of society doyenne Theresa Marshall, begging to make an honest woman of her? While anything goes in the Roaring Twenties, Gin’s adventures will shake proper Manhattan society to its foundations, exposing secrets that shock even this free-spirited redhead—secrets that will echo from Park Avenue to the hollers of her Southern hometown.

As Ella discovers more about the basement speakeasy, she becomes inspired by the spirit of her exuberant predecessor, and decides to live with abandon in the wicked city too. . . .

No One Is Coming to Save Us

No One Is Coming to Save Us:

by Stephanie Powell Watts (Author)

The Great Gatsby brilliantly recast in the contemporary South: a powerful first novel about an extended African-American family and their colliding visions of the American Dream.

JJ Ferguson has returned home to Pinewood, North Carolina to build his dream home and to woo his high school sweetheart, Ava. But he finds that the people he once knew and loved have changed, just as he has. Ava is now married, and wants a baby more than anything. The decline of the town’s once-thriving furniture industry has made Ava’s husband Henry grow distant and frustrated. Ava’s mother Sylvia has put her own life on hold as she caters to and meddles with those around her, trying to fill the void left by her absent son. And Don, Sylvia’s undeserving but charming husband, just won’t stop hanging around.

JJ’s newfound wealth forces everyone to consider what more they want and deserve from life than what they already have—and how they might go about getting it. Can they shape their lives to align with their wishes rather than their realities? Or are they resigned to the rhythms of the particular lives they lead? No One Is Coming to Save Us is a revelatory debut from an insightful voice that combines a universally resonant story with an intimate glimpse into the hearts of one family.

A Simple Favor

A Simple Favor

by Darcey Bell  (Author)

“Riveting and brilliantly structured, A Simple Favor is an edge-of-your seat domestic thriller about a missing wife and mother that relies on a rotating cast of unreliable narrators to ingeniously examine the cost of competitive mom-friends, the toll of ordinary marital discontent and the fallacy of the picture-perfect, suburban family.”—Kimberly McCreight, New York Times bestselling author

She’s your best friend.

She knows all your secrets.

That’s why she’s so dangerous.

A single mother’s life is turned upside down when her best friend vanishes in this chilling debut thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.

It starts with a simple favor—an ordinary kindness mothers do for one another. When her best friend, Emily, asks Stephanie to pick up her son Nicky after school, she happily says yes. Nicky and her son, Miles, are classmates and best friends, and the five-year-olds love being together—just like she and Emily. A widow and stay-at-home mommy blogger living in woodsy suburban Connecticut, Stephanie was lonely until she met Emily, a sophisticated PR executive whose job in Manhattan demands so much of her time.

But Emily doesn’t come back. She doesn’t answer calls or return texts. Stephanie knows something is terribly wrong—Emily would never leave Nicky, no matter what the police say. Terrified, she reaches out to her blog readers for help. She also reaches out to Emily’s husband, the handsome, reticent Sean, offering emotional support. It’s the least she can do for her best friend. Then, she and Sean receive shocking news. Emily is dead. The nightmare of her disappearance is over.

Or is it? Because soon, Stephanie will begin to see that nothing—not friendship, love, or even an ordinary favor—is as simple as it seems.

A Simple Favor is a remarkable tale of psychological suspense—a clever and twisting free-fall of a ride filled with betrayals and reversals, twists and turns, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge. Darcey Bell masterfully ratchets up the tension in a taut, unsettling, and completely absorbing story that holds you in its grip until the final page.

A glamorous cruise on a luxurious ocean liner turns deadly in the latest mystery from “Queen of Suspense” and #1 New York Times bestselling author Mary Higgins Clark.

Fleeing a disastrous and humiliating arrest of her husband-to-be on the eve of their wedding, Celia Kilbride, a gems and jewelry expert, hopes to escape from public attention by lecturing on a brand-new cruise ship—the Queen Charlotte.

On board she meets eighty-six-year-old Lady Emily Haywood, “Lady Em,” as she is known throughout the world. Immensely wealthy, Lady Em is the owner of a priceless emerald necklace that she intends to leave to the Smithsonian after the cruise.

Three days out to sea Lady Em is found dead—and the necklace is missing. Is it the work of her apparently devoted assistant, Brenda Martin, or her lawyer-executor, Roger Pearson, and his wife, Yvonne, both of whom she had invited to join them on the cruise? Or is it Professor Henry Longworth, an acclaimed Shakespeare scholar who is lecturing on board? Or Alan Davidson, a guest on the ship who is planning to spread his wife’s ashes at sea? The list of suspects is large and growing.

Celia, with the help of her new friends Willy and Alvirah Meehan, who are celebrating their forty-fifth wedding anniversary, sets out to find the killer, not realizing that she has put herself in mortal danger before the ship reaches its final destination.

Never, in all her long career as a #1 bestselling suspense novelist, has Mary Higgins Clark been in better form.

The Sleepwalker

The Sleepwalker

by Chris Bohjalian  (Author)

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Guest Room comes a spine-tingling novel of lies, loss, and buried desire—the mesmerizing story of a wife and mother who vanishes from her bed late one night.

When Annalee Ahlberg goes missing, her children fear the worst. Annalee is a sleepwalker whose affliction manifests in ways both bizarre and devastating. Once, she merely destroyed the hydrangeas in front of her Vermont home. More terrifying was the night her older daughter, Lianna, pulled her back from the precipice of the Gale River bridge. The morning of Annalee’s disappearance, a search party combs the nearby woods. Annalee’s husband, Warren, flies home from a business trip. Lianna is questioned by a young, hazel-eyed detective. And her little sister, Paige, takes to swimming the Gale to look for clues. When the police discover a small swatch of fabric, a nightshirt, ripped and hanging from a tree branch, it seems certain Annalee is dead, but Gavin Rikert, the hazel-eyed detective, continues to call, continues to stop by the Ahlbergs’ Victorian home. As Lianna peels back the layers of mystery surrounding Annalee’s disappearance, she finds herself drawn to Gavin, but she must ask herself: Why does the detective know so much about her mother? Why did Annalee leave her bed only when her father was away? And if she really died while sleepwalking, where was the body?

Conjuring the strange and mysterious world of parasomnia, a place somewhere between dreaming and wakefulness, The Sleepwalker is a masterful novel from one of our most treasured storytellers.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m an over-educated wise-arse. I speak sarcasm as a second language, and I’m Asperger’s. When I first started writing it was to write down an incredibly detailed dream (I was 11) and I’ve never stopped, though I only got serious about publishing for the second time about a year ago. I’d just finished my third full manuscript in last years NaNo (2015), and after editing it, a friend encouraged me to plug into writer twitter. Lol, I learned how much I needed to learn, found critique partners and beta readers and have been querying that novel since around June 2016. I’ve also queried the other two, to no traditional success. I write a lot of short stories and novellas as well as longer books. Before deciding I’d really try to publish my work, I’d been writing custom kink stories for private clients for a while. Basically, people would tell me their kinks, what they wanted their characters to look like and I’d write the story to their specifications.

I have been and done a lot of things over the course of my 40 years, because, maybe due to my Asperger’s, I’ve never felt like anything fit. After being a CSI-tech/forensic anthropologist (which is what one of my degrees is in) and turning down a job with the FBI (should totally have taken the job offer); I did a stint as a history teacher, but teaching to the test just didn’t work for me. In my younger years, I taught riding and worked as a dude ranch trail guide. In the winter, I worked at bookstores. During university, I taught Middle Eastern (belly) dance and Arabic hand drumming to earn money. I did a stint as a high-powered sales rep to the US gov’t, federal defense division, and I’ve met some interesting people through that. I’ve been to interesting places most people don’t get to see, but sales is such a soul-sucking type of career that I honestly didn’t last long before I burned out. I had swine flu one year, and that pretty much ended that career because not long after I developed fibromyalgia and had to take a medical leave.

Turns out why nothing ever fit is that I’ve been ignoring my calling for a few decades. Writing and editing professionally, those things are what I’m doing now, and I hope to keep being able to do full time for the rest of my life.

What types of books do you write, and why?

Kinky! I can’t think of anything I’ve written other than my very first novel which will likely never be unshelved (it’s probably terrible, so terrible I don’t want to even look at it to SEE how terrible it really is) that hasn’t been consensually kinky. Most of my novels are polyamorous, and everything I write is diverse in as many areas as I can authentically or sensitively represent. I tend towards mixed-ethnicity, pansexuality, genderqueerness and kink, but I can’t think of anything other than trans that I don’t write about. The only reason I haven’t *yet* written a trans character is that I don’t want to do harm. There’s a sheer dearth in diverse titles to read. I like the different, and I want more than mono-romance to read. Fortunately? I can write it. As far as genres, I write Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy with heavy romantic elements, and Science Fantasy. I haven’t yet tried to write more than Memoir in young adult. I’m pretty sure my style doesn’t support YA writing, but if I ever develop it, I’ll write in that age group as well.
